Documented international practice and our adaptation
UNICEF describes Magic Box as a platform using data to understand community needs in emergencies, including school mapping. We adapt the link between information, need and decisions. Our low-data listening session does not implement that platform. We collect no mobility data or household dossiers and infer no poverty from images or algorithms. The programme description does not establish outcomes for our proposed participants.
Reference and contribution
Humanitarian AI Advisory discusses benefits and risks when technology enters existing processes. Our contribution is an original low-data listening session where women and caregivers identify useful support without having to use an AI tool or share sensitive personal stories.
Proposed thirty-minute session
- 5 minutes: explain purpose and voluntary participation or withdrawal; no default photos or audio recording.
- 10 minutes: choose a general task such as understanding school instructions or organizing water questions. Offer written or oral responses in a comfortable language.
- 5 minutes: the facilitator groups anonymous themes and removes details that could identify someone in a small group.
- 5 minutes: participants review, correct or refuse publication of the summary.
- 5 minutes: select one idea for testing, a reviewer and a paper alternative.
AI is a later choice
After group agreement, a facilitator may ask AI to reorganize general themes, retaining local wording if the tool changes meaning. Upload no recordings, names or household addresses. Any later child participation needs a separate safeguarding design and appropriate permission; collect no child email.
Hypothetical example
A group asks for a simple school-visit question sheet, rather than a chatbot. The facilitator writes five questions and participants review them. Test whether a user can select a suitable question and how much help is needed. Keep paper if technology adds cost or narrows participation. This example is not a real participant quotation or field result.
